CSM is a challenging curriculum for everyone, and coaches are critical for most students - even those with a college degree will generally complete CSM more quickly and enjoy the experience more with a coach.
CSM coaches serve as a cheerleader and mentor through the learning process. Coaches can be in-person or remote, professional instructors or volunteers - they don't need to be math or literacy content experts, as it's important that the students learn skills on their own.
Coaching with CSM requires knowledge of the Toolkit (see below) and an intuitive knowledge of how coaching best serves student needs. In most educational technology, the teacher interface is simply a checklist of the skills that the student has learned. CSM's Toolkit evaluates students holistically - their learning strategies, their frustrations, the strengths they bring to learning - and displays these to coaches along with suggested interventions.

Coaches don't need to be professional educators or content experts. Anyone who brings thoughtfulness and enthusiasm and completes the CSM Coaching Certification course can be a successful CSM coach.

Expert Coaches are experienced with students of all ages and educational backgrounds, and can operate with students either in high intensity (finishing CSM within weeks) or low intensity (finishing CSM in months) programs.
